Wiccan Brew Smoothie
Wiccan Brew Smoothie. Name and inspiration from our local, health food store here in town. Although, I wish I could take credit for the name, because I like how powerful it makes this simple 6 ingredient smoothie: blueberry, spirulina, almond milk, banana, coconut water, and hemp seeds.
I’ve been recently getting into incorporating spirulina into my breakfast smoothies. It’s a great superfood with a vibrant green color. You don’t need a lot, because it has an intense flavor. And, it can quickly turn a smoothie into a dark looking, healthful brew.
Spirulina has a long laundry list of benefits, including acts as a natural antihistamine, helps get rid of toxins, stimulates growth and reproduction of good gut bacteria, aids in the production of melatonin (for better sleep), and helps ward off anemia. Truly a magical powder.
I had no idea about all that when I purchased our first bottle of the stuff. I was really going for the protein. As a vegetarian, it’s good to be mindful that we are eating enough protein, and not just filling up with carbs. Spirulina with a grain or a nut (see hemp seeds and almond milk in the recipe) combine to make this superfood a complete protein.
Something that I wonder if people who are jumping on the vegetarian or vegan train know about. Recently, I’ve heard of several of my friends and acquaintances making the change after watching a recent documentary. Several thoughts here: 1) glad people watch documentaries 2) glad a documentary can make you assess something you’ve taken for granted/eaten for a long time 3) do some research to get everything you need. Foods that have complete protein combinations (a.k.a. get all the amino acids you need from food that you can’t make yourself) are quinoa (there’s a reason we hippies like it so much), buckwheat, soy, rice and beans (meaning together), Ezekiel bread, seitan, wheat and chickpeas (hummus and pitas), and the combination we use here.
So, after mini-mothering of you all, here’s the recipe! I’ll keep posting tasty, nutritious vegetarian and vegan recipes to keep you all inspired and hopefully stick to your new-found commitments.
