Raw Cacao Espresso Smoothie
We’ve just come back from a trek across the world from California to Hawaii to Bali and back. With so much tropical weather, it’s been strange to come back to California’s cold weather. It still felt like summer when we left, and now it’s all about scarves, pumpkin spice, heaters, and boots. When we were in Bali, we went to a cafe, called In the Raw Bali, in the surfing beach town of Cangguu. Cold pressed juices, smoothies, and healthy foods, so no surprise we ended up there on our first official day in Cangguu.
One of my favorite smoothies at this cafe was something they call the “Ubud Raw.” It was a cold blended smoothie that you could stir in a shot of espresso. So tasty. So, even in fall, I came back and wanted to recreate something with these superfoods and that added coffee deliciousness. No surprises that this is the first thing I’ve tackled on the blog since I’ve come back.
Raw cacao is a far cry from the cocoa powders of our youth with added sugars and dairy. Here we get the chocolately flavor with the bonus of all the health benefits that this superfood packs. In this blended delight, we combine raw cacao, avocado, bananas, dates, and your favorite nut milk for the base of your smoothie. Serve with a shot of espresso for the added coffee flavor and a little extra energy boost. If you’d rather skip the caffeine, choice decaf! - 1 large banana
- 1 cup nut milk of your choice
- 2 Tbsp cacao powder
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 2 pitted dates
- 6 ice cubes
- 1 shot of espresso*
- Blend banana, nut milk, cacao, avocado, dates, and ice cubes in blender. Pour into cup for serving. Serve with espresso shot on the side. Pour espresso shot over the smoothie, and stir.
*I used a lighter roast espresso.
